Vestigial organs are remnants of organs that had important functions in ancestors. They no longer fulfill the function for which they were originally intended.
It is so called since it is a vestige of something earlier found. [A vestige is a trace, mark, or visible sign left by something (as an ancient city or a condition or practice) vanished or lost]
