While solving numericals, when should we use total resistance(R) and internal restiance(r) in the ohms law?

For ideal circuit which do not mention any internal resistance should be treated normally. If there is written any where that it's an ideal circuit then there is no internal resistance in battery.for  any given circuit internal resistance always connected in series.
