When battery is connected to a resistance an EMF get created at the terminal of the battery. This EMF is a result of electric field present in the battery due to charges. This electric field align all the electron in a particular direction from higher to lower potential. EMF gives a push to electron and it get started to flow in the circuit. This results into electric current.
