Expert Answer
If the carrier wave is not continuous but in the form of pulses, the common pulse modulation systems are:
(i) Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) in which amplitude of the pulses of the carrier pulse train varies in accordance with the modulating signal.
(ii) Pulse Duration Modulation (PDM) or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) in which the pulse duration or the width of the pulses of carrier pulse train is varied in accordance with the modulating signal.
(iii) Pulse Position Modulation (PPM), the position of the pulses of the carrier wave train is varied in accordance with the instantaneous value of modulating signal.
