The SA node or sinoatrial node also called the pacemaker of the heart is one of the major elements in the cardiac conduction system, the system that controls the heart rate. The pacemaker generates electrical impulses and conducts them throughout the muscle of the heart, stimulating the heart to contract and pump blood. If the pacemaker of the heart is not functional, the cardiac muscles will not be able to contract rhythmically in a coordinated manner. This would, in turn, affect the pumping of blood and may even lead to cardiac arrest.
