Expert Answer:
When the object is in motion, its velocity, i.e, speed in specified direction is plotted as a function of time.
In x-axis time is considered and y-axis velocity is considered.
From the slope of velocity-time graph , we know the motion is uniform or accelerated motion.
Area under the graph between two time instances gives the distance travelled by the object in the the time duration .
In graph-(a) velocity is constant for all time . Hence it is uniform motion.
In graph-(b) velocity keeps on increasing , hence it is accelerated motion
In graph-(c) velocity keeps on decreasing, hence it is retarded motion.
Area between two time instances gives the distance travelled in the time duration.

- Starting from rest, an object is uniformly accelerated to a speed of 60m/s in 20s. The object travels with this speed for next 40s and is then brought to rest by a uniform retardation in the next 30s.Sketch velocity time graph and calculate the acceleration, retardation and the total distance travelled. Hint: acceleration =rate of change of velocity. distance covered =area under velocity-time graph .
