Stigma is the part of the pistil where pollen germinates. It plays an important role in reproduction. The function of the stigma in a flower is as a pollen receptor. Most of the stigmas are covered with waxy and sticky substance. Stigmas are adapted to trap the pollen to increase their efficiency. The wet substance over the stigma allows to provide an important service by rehydrating the pollen. It has complex chemical-signal interactions with pollen that may disallow the germination of the undesirable pollen that accidentally land on the stigma. The pollen then prepare the grains to enter the ovary and initiate the process of fertilization.
