Genetic drift is caused due to drastic changes in the frequencies of particular genes by chance alone. Genetic drift with changes in the gene flow imposed by isolation mechanism acts as an agent of speciation. Genetic drift can result in evolutionary divergence. Due to genetic drift, the variance between small sub populations increases with time. Due to genetic drift, allele frequencies fluctuate randomly in each sub population. This fluctuation is more rapid and more severe in smaller sub populations.
