What is self inductance ?

When a current is established in a conductor, a magnetic field is produced around it. If a steady current flows the number of lines of force would tend to remain the same. But if the current changes with time, the flux with the loop changes and hence an e.m.f is induced in the loop. This phenomenon is called as self induction.

Self inductance is defined as the induction of a voltage in a current-carrying wire when the current in the wire itself is changing. In the case of self-inductance, the magnetic field created by a changing current in the circuit itself induces a voltage in the same circuit. Therefore, the voltage is self-induced.
