What is Magnus effect?

When a ball is thrown and given a spin, then the path of the ball is curved. The velocity of air above the ball is relatively large than below it. This difference in the velocities of air results in the pressure difference between the lower and upper faces which provides an upward force on the ball. This dynamic lift due to spinning is called Magnus effect.
