what is centripetal force ?

Centripetal force is the force required for an object to move along a curved path.

For example, in Uniform Circular Motion, the speed is constant but the direction of velocity changes at each point and hence velocity itself changes.

A change is velocity means acceleration.

An acceleration means a force.

And this is the centripetal force, directed towards the centre.
