what is a test charge?how do we know the direction of an electric field?

Expert Answer
To check whether there is an electric field at a particular point, we place a small charged body at the point. This is called a test charge.
The direction of the electric field can be understood from the direction of the force that a test charge experiences. If the test charge is positive then the direction of force is in the direction of the field. If test charge is negative then direction of force is opposite to direction of field.
