What does "production of gene knockout organism" mean in the context of back cross?

In a back cross, when an organism's gene is made knocked out or inoperative whose functions are incompletely known or are totally unknown is called production of gene knockout organism. It refers to the process of creating an organism in which some genes are knocked out and the organism formed is called transgenic organism.
