Since in box M the electric field goes as 1/r2, it's due to a single charge particle or body either positive or negative, becuase it's the characteristic of point charges/bodies electric field (Coulomb's Law). While the second box, N, contains dipole moment as the said variation of electric field is the characteristic of dipoles along the axis and equator.
