CBSE Class 10 Answered
The students of a school decided to beautify the school on the Annual Day by
fixing colourful flags on the straight passage of the school. They have 27 flags
to be fixed at intervals of every 2 m. The flags are stored at the position of the
middle most flag. Ruchi was given the responsibility of placing the flags. Ruchi
kept her books where the flags were stored. She could carry only one flag at a
time. How much distance did she cover in completing this job and returning
back to collect her books? What is the maximum distance she travelled carrying
a flag

Flowers and books are stored at middle flag position .
If there are 27 flag in total, then 13 flags at left and other 13 flags at right of middle flag.
Distance between one flag to neighbour is 2 m.
Hence Ruchi has to travel a distance d1 in left side is given as
d = 2 × ( 26 + 24 + 22 ................................+4+ 2 ) m
Bracketted term in above distance is Arithmetic progression series with first term a = 26 m,
common difference d = - 2 m and number n of terms is 13
d = 2 × (13/2) [ 2 × 26 - 12 × 2 ] = 364 m
Similarly at right side also she will walk a distance of 364 m
Total distance travelled by Ruchi = ( 364 + 364 ) m = 728 m
------------------------------------------
maximum distance travelled by Ruch when she carries a flag = 26 m
