Two important reasons that prompted the British to withdraw from India are;
- Indian national movement became a mass movement
- Britain needed Indian support during the Second World War. Congress offered to help the British government in their war efforts on condition of self-government. The Indian naval mutiny of 1946 finally made the British realise that they would now not be able to rule India for a longer period of time.
