Expert Answer
The introduction of railways and telegraph resented as people in those times considered that modern innovations threatened the old social rules and produced unrest among many common orthodox people in India. They further felt that the telegraph poles were constructed to hang people and punish them for participating in the national movement.
Railways were seen as polluting one's religious beliefs. In railways no separate travelling arrangements were made for the upper caste and lower caste people. This was resented by the people of the upper caste.
