The League of Nations was formed by the victorious nations of the First World War. In order to prevent the WWII from taking place, the League should have taken the following steps which they failed to do:

• The members of the League should have opposed the imposition of heavy fines over Germany. As a result of the huge indemnities imposed on her, Germany faced economic distress. Hitler was able to take the advantage of this situation by promising the Germans that he would economically reconstruct the nations if he is elected to power. 
• Many powerful members of the League like Britain and France followed the policy of appeasement and did not take any action against powerful nations who committed the act of aggression. For example, the league took no action against the offending countries when Poland seized a part of Lithuania in 1920, Japan captured Manchuria (China) in 1931, Italy annexed Ethiopia (Africa) in 1936. 
• Thus, the member nations began to lose faith in the League.

Thus, the League should have opposed the acts of aggression of the powerful nations. The aggression of Hitler and Mussolini in late 1930s should have been opposed.
