When the entire set up is immersed in water, the wavelength of light incident decreases and hence the fringe width,β decreases in water.
Fringe width, β=λD/d
Where, λ - wavelength of light
D - distance between screen and slit
d - distance between the slits
Thus, original fringe width can be restored by,
A) by bringing the slits close together, as fringe width is inversely proportional to d
B) moving the screen away from the slit pane as fringe width is directly proportional to D
C)by replacing the incident light with that of longer wavelength as fringe width is directly proportional to wavelength of light
Thus, the original fringe width cannot be restored by introducing thin glass slab in front of the slits as this will only displace the fringes and it will bot affect the fringe width.
Correct option is (D).
