Ram travels on a straight road. He goes from position A to position B. The distance between A and B is 4 Km. Now from position B he turns back and trvels a distance of 2 Km to reach the position C.

Expert Answer:

Assuming that he is travelling forward and backward along a straight linear path.

a)
The distance covered by Ram during the whole journey
Distance from position A to position B = 4 Km
Distance from position B to position C = 2 Km
Therefore, the total distance  covered by Ram during the whole journey = 6 km

b)
The magnitude of his displacement
Distance from position A to position B = 4 Km
Distance from position B to position C = 2 Km
Displacement is change from the original position to final position.
The distance that he travelled back shall be taken as negative.
Magnitude of his displacement= 4 - 2 km = 2 Km
