Radium is highly radioactive material even in natural form. ItsI radiate radiation all the time. So whenever any object place near radium it's been exposed to highly active radiation field. Radiation is also a decay of mass. As radiation happens for long time it's mass also get decreased
So the material residue can also emit radiation. This is why sensor is reading radiation.
Like clothes wore by firefighter in Chernobyl disaster still radiate radiation and highly active after 30 yeras . It's because residue of radioactive material still left on their clothes.
This phenomenon is known as decay of material. The only source here is nuclei of an atom which decay internally.
