Q. An electric Lamp is rated 220 V and 50 W. Find the power consumed when it is operated on 120 V.

Let us find out the resistance R of the bulb that has power rating 50W when it is operating in 220 V .
Power P = V2 / R
where V is voltage and R is resitance
Hence resistance R = V2 / P = ( 220 × 220 ) / 50 = 968 Ω
When this bulb is connected to 120 V , then consumed power P is given as
P = ( 120 × 120 ) / 968 = 14.876 W
