Distance traveled from well to first tree then back to well for watering first tree = 10+10 m = 20 m
 
distance between trees = 5 m
 
Distance traveled from well to second tree then back to well for watering second tree = 15+15 m = 30 m
 
Distance traveled from well to third tree then back to well for watering third tree = 20+ 20 m = 40 m
 
Hence , total distance D travelled to water 25 trees is given by sum of following series
 
D = 20 m + 30 m + 40 m + ...............................................
 
Above series is in arithmetic progression that has 25 terms . First term a = 20 and the common difference d = 10 .
 
Sum of 25 terms is calculated using the formula " begin mathsize 14px style S subscript n space equals space n over 2 space open square brackets 2 a space plus space left parenthesis n minus 1 right parenthesis d close square brackets end style " , where n = 25 is number of terms
begin mathsize 14px style D space equals space 25 over 2 open square brackets 2 space cross times space 20 space plus space left parenthesis 25 minus 1 right parenthesis space cross times 10 close square brackets space equals space 3500 space m end style
