Q: A, B and C are 3 vessels having mixtures of wine and water. A contains 30% wine, B contains 40% wine and C contains 45% wine. If 4 litres from A, 3 litres from B and 5 litres from C are mixed, find the concentration of wine in the final mixture.
Solution:
A contains 30% wine, so it contains 70% water.
B contains 40% wine, so it contains 60% water.
C contains 45% wine, so it contains 55% water.
4 litres from A contain 30% wine i.e. 30/100 x 4 = 6/5 litres of wine
3 litres from B contain 40% wine i.e. 40/100 x 3 = 6/5 litres of wine
5 litres from C contain 45% wine i.e. 45/100 x 5 = 9/4 litres of wine
Volume of wine in the final mixture = 6/5 + 6/5 + 9/4 = 93/20
Volume of the mixture = 4+3+5 = 12 litres
Concentration of wine in the final mixture = (93/20)/12 x 100 = 465/12 = 155/4 = 38 3/4 %
