Question: Vessel P contains solution of milk and water in the ratio 2:3 whereas vessel Q contains solution of milk and water in the ratio 1:2. If 5 litres of solution from P is mixed with 15 litres of solution from Q, find the ratio of milk and water in the final mixture.
Solution:
P contains milk and water in the ratio 2:3
5 litres of solution from P contains 2 litres of milk and 3 litres of water.
Q contains milk and water in the ratio 1:2
15 litres of solution from P contains 15 x 1/3 = 5 litres of milk and 15 x 2/3 = 10 litres of water.
The final mixture has 5+15 = 20 litres.
The quantity of milk = 7 litres
The quantity of water = 13 litres
Ratio of milk and water in the final mixture is 7:13.
