Question: Abhishek bought milk at Rs. 20 per litre. He mixed is with water and then sold the mixture at his cost price and made a profit of 25%. Find the quantity of water mixed with each litre of milk (in litres).
Solution:
Cost price of 1 litre of milk = Rs. 20
Selling price of 1 litre of mixture = Rs. 20
Let the cost price of the mixture be Rs. x
Therefore, x + 25% of x = 20
125x/100 = 20
x = 16
Thus, the cost price of the mixture must be Rs. 16 per litre.
Quantity of milk in 1 litre of the mixture is 16/20 = 4/5
Therefore, quantity of water in 1 litre of the mixture = 1 - 4/5 = 1/5 = 0.20 litres
