Two characteristics which make black soil suitable for growing crops are:
  • It contains a high proportion of calcium and magnesium carbonates
  • Black soil is highly moisture-retentive. This retention of moisture makes sure that the crop gets water for a long time without irrigation or rains.
Characteristics which makes red soil suitable for growing crops are:
  • Red soil has high iron content and is suitable for crops like red gram, Bengal gram, green gram, groundnut and castor seed.
  • Black soil is rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium
