JEE Class main Answered
Earthing provides a safety measure for electrical
circuits and appliances. A thick metal plate is buried deep into the earth
and thick wires are drawn from this plate; these are used in buildings
for the purpose of earthing near the mains supply.
Why only "thick" wire and "thick" metal plates are used?

Expert Answer
Thick wire and thick metal plate has negligible resistance . Hence if high current passing through this
thick wire and thick metal plate, then potential difference developed between earth which is at zero potential
and the equipment will be very small and the potential at equipment is very near the earth potential.
Hence equiment will not be damaged.
If the connecting wire or metal plate is not thick , that will have significant resistance .
If high current pass through this resistance , then potental difference will be very high and that will damage the equipment.
