If there is no battery is connected with the wire , the motion of the electrons will be random due to repulsion and due to heat energy possesed by the material at room temperature and due to the collision with the atoms. But when battery is connectecd , the electrons will attract towards the positive terminal of the battery. Yes the effects mentioned above will be there but the force due to the battery will be dominant.
