if we are given that one personcovers around in 12 minutes and an another person covers the same round in 18 minutes . find the time in which the two will meet for the first time. how would we know that what we have to find lcm or hcf

Here, we need to find the lcm as they will meet only when both of them will be at the same point at the same time, irrespective of how many rounds have been completed by either of the persons. 
 
So, the 2 person will meet for the first time at 36 min, which is the lcm of 12 and 18.
