CBSE Class 11-science Answered

HC  ≡ CH  H2O-------->+Hg^2+/H^+ ©what effect does branching of an alkane chain has on its boiling point
Asked by gganga | 14 Apr, 2018, 10:00: PM
Expert Answer
Because of branching the molecules are more compact hence there surface area decreases, hence the van der Waal's forces of attraction which depend on the surface area also become small in magnitude.

Resulting, the B.P. of branched chain alkane are less than straight chain isomers.
