PE = -GMm(1/r2 - 1/r1) = GMm(r2 - r2)/(r2 r1)

Hence when r2 ≈ r1 = R

then,

PE = -GMm(1/r2 - 1/r1) = GMm(r2 - r2)/R2

= gm(r2 - r2) ......using GM/R2 = g.
