Momentum is defined as a product of mass and velocity.
P = mv
so the rate of change of momentm will be:
(p2-p1)/t where the velocity changes from v1 to v2 in tim einterval t
= m(v2-v1)/t = ma
thus the veelocity is changing causing the acceleration.
