It is the phenomenon of inhibition of growth of lateral (axillary) buds in a plant by the presence of the terminal (apical) bud on the branch. Here the plant's growth is concentrated on the terminal bud, allowing it to grow taller, thereby increasing its exposure to sunlight. This is induced by auxin.
