Expert Answer
(a) Suppose the working substance takes heat Q2 from a sink at a lower temperature, does the work W on it and a higher amount of heat Q1 = Q2 + W, is rejected to the source at a higher temperature.
Such a device, which by doing work on it is made to extract heat from a colder body, is called a refrigerator and the working substance the refrigerant. The gas used is Freon (CCI2F2 - dichlorodifluoromethane).
(b) In the household refrigerators, the work is done with the help of an electric motor.
