This means that when the direction of electric field is that along which the change of potential is maximum. In other words, if we move along the line of electric field, then we will see maximum change or decrease as there is a negative sign, in the potential. So for curve 1, when you move along the electric field, the potential change is maximum, and for 2 when you pass the electric field at an angle there will be potential change but the change will be less than that of in the first path, so when you see the graphs given in the options, we know that both 1 and 2 have to be decreasing and the slope of 1 should be more than that of 2. Hence the correct option is 1.
