A transverse travelling wave represented by a equation: y = (1 cm) sin[2nx – 20πt]; where X is in meters and t is in seconds, is travelling on a string of mass per unit length 0.01 Kg/m. Find the kinetic energy (in mille joule) of a portion of the string of length equal to one wavelength. (Take : π² = 10)

Equation of travelling transverse wave in a string is

where A is amplitude of wave , λ is wavelength and ω is angular frequency.
Given transverse wave in string is

By comparing eqn.(1) and (2) , we get amplitude A = 1 cm , wavelength λ = 1 m and angular frequency ω = 20π rad/s
Energy of transverse wave
where μ = 0.01 kg/m is linear mass density , i.e., mass per unit length of the string
E = 0.5 × 0.01 × (0.01)2 × (20π)2 × 1 J = 2 × 10-3 J = 2 mJ
