According to the Bohr theory of electronic distribution, we know that there are shells which are named as K, L, M , N,..... and they carry 2, 8, 18, 32,... electrons respectively. But in actual theory, each of the shell is further divided into subshells which are named as s, p, d, f subshells. These subshells consist of a specific number of orbitals. Each s-subshell can have maximum of two electrons, p-subshell can have six electrons and so on.. In case of Iron, it has incompletely filled d-subshell due to which it has configuration 2, 8, 14, 2 and not 2, 8, 8, 8. Also, The last electron is present in the d-subshell.
