Among the different sources of energy from ocean, two important sources of energy are (1) tidal energy, (2)Thermal energy
Tidal Energy:- When tides come into shore, they can be trapped in reservoirs behind dams.
Then when the tide drops, the water behind the dam can be let out just like in a regular hydro-electric power plant.
In order for tidal energy to work well, we need relatively large increase in tides. An increase of atleast 16 feet between
low tide to high tide is generally needed. There are only a few places where this tide change occurs around the earth.
Installations using this tidal energy has generated only smaller power range from 400 kW to 20 MW.
Thermal Energy :- Ocean thermal energy conversion process uses the temperature difference in the ocean.
Ocean surface is warmer on the surface because sunlight warms the water. But below the surface, ocean gets very cold.
Power plants use this difference in temperature to make energy.
A difference of atleast 22ºC is needed between the warmer surface water and the colder deep ocean water.
In addition to higher initial cost, disturbance or destruction of marine life is the main issue for the energy conversion projects to be executed in ocean.
