Expert Answer
Hi Krishna!
A transformer steps up or steps down an AC voltage based on the principle of Electromagnetic Induction.
Electromagnetic induction is applicable only for the Alternating current as there would not be any induced voltage in the secondary winding of the transformer when DC current is applied at the primary side of the transformer.
In fact, the application of DC current would cause the coil to burn due to continuous high voltage supply of current through the coil winding.
Therefore, neither step up or step down transformer be used to change DC Voltage.
