Why soft iron used as the core of the electromagnet in an electric bell?

On placing a soft iron rod in a solenoid and passing a current, the magnetism of the solenoid is increased by a
thousand fold. When solenoid current is switched off, the magnetism is effectively switched off since the soft iron core has a low retentivity.
Because of this magnetic property of soft iron, it is used in electric bell.
