If work is done on the system by conservative force, then potential energy does not increase.
Only when work is done against a conservative force, it causes increase of potential energy of the system.
 
example :-
If an object initially at a height h with potential energy ( m × g × h ) falls down in gravitational field staring from rest,
work is done by gravitational forceon the falling object. here potential energy does not increase but decreases .
Whereas if an object projected upward , work is done against the gravitational force that causes increase of potential energy
