why is the field covered with water inorder to prevent anomalous expansion of water??

Due to severe cold when water freezes, its volume increases and can burst the capillaries in plants. Water in the field due to its very high specific heat capacity does not allow the water in capillaries to freeze. Hence preventing the expansion of water present in capillaries.
