ICSE Class 9 Answered
Why does the phospholipid bilayer in the cell membrane need a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic end? What would happen if this was not the case?

Expert Answer
The dual nature of phospholipids allow membranes to form without added catalyst or energy. If phospholipids were different, then membrane formation would be difficult. The hydrophobic core also acts as a barrier to movement of molecules, thus allowing the cell to control what it needs to transport across. Without that barrier, the cell would not be able to effectively regulate its metabolism.
