ICSE Class 9 Answered
What will be action and reaction in the case a moving train collides with a stationary train.
Pls give specific answer like what will happen as a result of reaction force of the stationary train on the colliding train?

Expert Answer
Let us assume mass of both the trains is same. Collision will not be perfectly elastic because
elastic collisions will take place in ideal case like collisions of smooth billiard balls.
If u1 is the initial speed of moving train and other train is at rest , then after collision speeds of the train will be
u2 = u1 (1-e)/2 , v2 = u1 (1+e)/2
e is coefficient of restitution , 0< e <1
Hence the impulsive force imparted by the moving train makes the other train, which is initially at rest, to gain momentum.
Whereas the reaction force imparted by the train, which is at rest initially, makes the moving train to reduce its speed ( loss of momentum ).
Magnitude of gain in momentum of the train which is at rest initially same as the magnitude of loss of momentum of the moving train
