Expert Answer
Split ring is used in electric motor to reverse the current when the current carrying coile rotates in the magentic field produced by magnet.
we see in the left side figure, when cuerrent is flowing in the coil from B to C, as per Flemings left hanf rule it experience a force upward direction due to magnetic field . Silarly DE part of coil experience a downward force F . These two unlike parallel forces giving a torque to coil , hence coil rotates.
After 180° rotation , as shown in right side figure, due to split rings, current directions along the length BC and length DE are reversed.
Due to current reversal, forces acting on these parts of the coil reverse, giving reversed torque and make the coil to rotate in same direction.
These current reversal repeats for each cycle due to split rings and the coil rotates continuously
