What is deviation of light

Deviation of light is due to the phenomenon of refraction. When light travels from one medium to other medium ( like air to glass) it deviates
from its original path of preveous medium. This si known as refraction of light. For example in the figure given above, deviation of light ray in glass slab is illustrated in left side. Light ray Ab enters at B. B is point of incidence on the air-glass boundary. In glass medium the light ray bends towards normal. this is because light travels from air which is rare medium to glass which is denser medium. BC is refracted ray. Refracted light ray BC emerges out of glass at the point C and travels in air. Since there is a medium change along its path, refraction is taking place at glass-air boundary. Now the light ray travels from denser medium to rarer medium. Hence deviation of the light ray is away from normal. Though light ray AB is parallel to light ray CD, there is a deviation in its path.
Similarly deviation of light ray when it travels from air to glass prism and then again glass prism to air is illustrated in right side of figure. AB is incident ray and BC is refracted ray. refracted ray always bend towards base of prism. CD is emergent ray.  begin mathsize 12px style angle F E C end style is angle of deviation
