when light is going from denser to rarer medium, critical angle is the angle of incidence for which the angle of refraction becomes 90.the refracted ray passes through the boundary surface of the two medium.
if the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, then after refraction it bounces back to the previous medium. this is called total internal reflection.
