  • When you get a cut or a wound, the skin gets ruptured or damaged. If the cut is superficial, then there is little or no bleeding and the site of cut gets healed easily.
  • However, when the cut is deep and blood starts oozing from the site of cut, it implies that blood vessels are cut or damaged,
  • It is important to prevent the loss of blood from the body system before shock and possible death occur.
  • This is accomplished by a process which involves solidification of the blood, called coagulation or clotting. Blood cells called platelets and proteins in our plasma work together and stops bleeding.
  • As soon as an artery or a vein is injured, the platelets in the injured area begin to clump together and stick to the edges of the cut. They also release messengers into the blood which perform a variety of functions like constricting the blood vessels to reduce bleeding, attracting more platelets to the area to enlarge the platelet plug and initiating the activation of clotting factors such as fibrinogen.
  • Blood clotting is very essential for an individual to prevent the loss of blood and later anaemia.
