Two pith-balls each wieghing 10-3 kg are suspended from the same point by means of silk thread 0.5 m long. On charging the pith balls equally, they found to repel each other to distance of 0.2 m .Calculate the charge on each ball?

Expert Answer
Figure shows the different forces acting on the pith-ball, i.e., Tension T in string, weight mg of the ball
and electrostatic force Fe .
By resolving Tension force, we write, T sinθ = Fe ....................(1)
T cosθ = m g .........................(2)
dividing (1) by (2), we get , tanθ = Fe / mg
Hence if q is charge on each ball, then ..................(3)
Using eqn.(3) and substituting 1/(4πεo ) = 9×109 , we get q ≈ 0.94×10-7C = 94 nC
